“I
am.” is Jewish
not
Canadian!
Many Canadians
are surprised to learn that I
am is is the name of the God.
Exodus 3:13-14
And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them,
The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is
his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses,
I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou
say unto the children of Israel, I
AM hath sent me unto you. I believe using
God’s name to sell beer violates one of the ten commandments. Exodus 20:7
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the
LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.
There are serious
consequences for breaking the third commandment.
Leviticus 24:11-14 And
the Israelitish woman’s son blasphemed the name of the LORD, and cursed. And they brought him unto Moses: (and his
mother’s name was Shelomith, the
daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:) And they put him in ward, that the mind
of the LORD might be showed them. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Bring
forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him
lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him. The good news is that God is not willing
that any should perish. Therefore
the Prophets foretold of the coming of the Messiah who would pay the penalty for
our sins. Moses wrote:
Deuteronomy 18:15
The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a
Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall
hearken; Isaiah wrote:
Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a
sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name
Immanuel. Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son
is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be
called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince
of Peace. When Jesus walked
on the earth many people thought he was the Messiah, the prophet like Moses. John 7:40-41
Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said,
Of a truth this is the Prophet. Others said, This is the Messiah
(Christ). But some said, Shall Messiah
(Christ) come out of Galilee? There are 7 times
when Jesus publicly proclaimed that he was I am..
“There
are seven instances in this gospel (i.e. John) where our Lord uses this short
sentence with telling effect. We miss most of them in our English Bible, for the
translators so often felt that it was necessary to add the word “he”.
It is not in the original. In
one instance the words are translated “It is I”.
But in every case the greek has simply Ego Eimi.
I
Am.”. The
Seven Great I Am’s, Archibald Campbell, Christian Literature Crusade, page
17. Here are the
seven places where Jesus publicly proclaims that He is I
am. Note:I
have taken the liberty to remove the added words from the original text. John 4:25-26
The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is
called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto
her, I am that
speak unto thee. John 6:19-20
So when they had rowed about five and
twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh
unto the ship: and they were afraid. But he saith unto them,
I am;
be not afraid. John 8:24
For if ye believe not that I
am, ye shall die in your sins. John 8:28
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man,
then shall ye know that I am, and
that I do nothing of myself; but as my
Father hath taught me, I speak these things. There have been
many false Messiahs who would never think of dying for someone else.
Jesus proclaims when he has been lifted up on the cross, then we will
know that He is I
am. This
is because Note: Isaiah
prophesied that the Messiah would die for the sins of his people.
Isaiah 53:5-6
But he was
wounded for our transgressions, he was
bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep
have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath
laid on him the iniquity of us all. John 8:57-59 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. John 13:19
Now I tell you before it come, that, when
it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am. The resurrection
from the dead, is the greatest proof that Jesus is the I
am, that is spoken of in the Bible.
Note:
Many false Messiahs have come and gone, they died, and their bodies
remain in the grave. But Jesus is
different, for He rose from the dead. 1 Corinthians
15:3-8 For
I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ
died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that
he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of
Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred
brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some
are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.
And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. John 18:4-8
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that
should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They
answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I
am. And Judas also, which betrayed
him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I
am, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he them again,
Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you
that I am:
if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: When Jesus made
his proclamation that he was I
am, His enemies fell to the ground.
I am is
not Canadian, He is the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Bible warns us that we must receive Him as our Lord and Savior, or we
will die in our sins! Mark 16:16
but he that believeth not shall be damned. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. 1 John 5:12
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. The word name (Hashem
in Hebrew) means signature. It
was understood that your name (signature) represented your reputation. Proverbs 22:1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches. 1 John 2:12
I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven
you for his name’s sake. Here is a
suggested prayer for anyone who would like to be saved from their sins. Dear God, I am a sinner and need forgiveness.
I believe that Jesus shed his precious blood and died for my sin.
I am willing to turn from my sin, and now invite Jesus to come into my
heart and life as my personal Savior and Lord.
Amen. Written
